DISpace@ULB in brief

Purpose

DISpace is an internal project of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) aiming at setting up an institutional repository which will contain the complete academic bibliography of the University, and which will function as the official deposit of all scientific output of the Institution.

During the first phase in 2005, DISpace has been installed, tested and enriched with new functionalities; the juridical aspects were studied, the general policy was developed and some volunteers have been approached in the faculties.  A first filling was also realized with the bibliography and full-text files of six researchers from the economics departments in the framework of the Economists Online project.

The second phase of the project (year 2006) aims to go on with the developments in order to launch the service to the university’s research community in 2007.

Tasks of the second phase

1.  Finalize the basis of the platform

- creation of a front-end for the submission and update of items in DISpace
- fully functional authentication system (integrated into the University’s administration)

- creation of a public search interface, through integration with the library portal (iPort from OCLC)

- bulk ingest of metadata and accompanying object files in DISPace (from Excel files)

2.   Develop some added-value services

- bulk ingest from external databases (eg. PubMed)

- export of metadata as bibliographic references

- automated forwarding of metadata into Repec and Google Scholar

- integration of DISpace content within Web sites of authors and research units

3.   Test the platform

4.   Continue to fill the IR

- bibliographies of the university authorities and six research unit directors

- bibliographies of 25 researchers from the economics departments

- check copyright and load of the accompanying object files

5.    Promote the IR within the University community

- finalize and update the general policy

- present DISpace to authorities and come to agreements

- partnerships with the other university departments involved (Research Department, IT Department,...)

- prepare the advocacy materials for launch in 2007

6.          Assure service sustainability (business plan)

 Beginning and end

01/01/2006–31/12/2006 (second phase).
